Celebrity Autobiography Broadway Review: Hit or Miss? Stars Read Stars' Memoirs (2026)

The Broadway debut of 'Celebrity Autobiography' is a curious affair, to say the least. It's a show that attempts to capitalize on the allure of celebrity, but ultimately falls flat, lacking the comedic punch one might expect. The premise is simple: celebrities read the autobiographies of other celebrities, exposing their self-importance and narcissism in a way that's both amusing and cringe-worthy. However, the execution leaves much to be desired.

The cast, including Scott Adsit, Mario Cantone, and Jeff Hiller, tries their best to bring humor to the stage. But the material they're working with is hit or miss. The autobiographies chosen for readings range from easy targets like Kris Jenner and Justin Bieber to stale choices like Liza Minnelli and Carol Channing. The inclusion of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton's autobiographies is particularly baffling, suggesting a lack of better options.

The show's set is bare, with only a table of books and six stand-up mics, emphasizing the intimacy of the production. However, this very intimacy becomes a limitation. The show feels too small in scope, lacking the ambition to fill a Broadway venue. Ticket prices range from $49 to $329, which is a significant investment for a show that doesn't quite deliver the laughs one might hope for.

The co-creators, Eugene Pack and Dayle Reyfel, also take part in the show, further undermining the celebrity conceit with their frequent appearances. While there are moments of brilliance, such as Dolly Parton's diet advice and David Hasselhoff's portrayal of Oprah, these are few and far between. The overall show feels like a missed opportunity, a celebrity-filled affair that fails to live up to its potential.

Perhaps the show's rushed Broadway debut is to blame, as it was announced just weeks ago. But even so, the material and the execution don't quite match the grandeur of Broadway. Audiences might be better off choosing their celebrities wisely, as the show itself seems to have done.
