The Illume Awards, a renowned competition celebrating the world's most breathtaking adventure and action sports photography, is back with a fresh perspective. This year, the contest is not just about recognizing photographers but also about spotlighting the environments they explore and the impact of their work. By partnering with NGOs like Leave No Trace and World Bicycle Relief, The Illume is emphasizing the importance of preserving the very places that inspire these photographers.
What makes this edition particularly exciting is the introduction of eight dedicated sports categories: Adventure, Aerial, Bike, Climb, Skate, Snow, Surf, and Trail. This expansion broadens the spectrum of submissions, allowing photographers to showcase their talent across various disciplines. Additionally, the eight theme categories - Close-Up, Emerging, Innovation, Lifestyle, Masterpiece, Playground, RAW, and Spirit - provide even more opportunities for recognition.
The judging process has also been enhanced. A panel of 60 international judges, including previous winners, athletes, and media representatives from renowned outlets like ESPN and Sports Illustrated, will evaluate the entries. James, with his 25 years of journalism experience and 7 years as the head of Digital Camera World, will also be part of the judging team, bringing his expertise to the table.
The competition is open to all photographers, from amateurs to professionals, and submissions can be made until July 31, 2026.Semifinalists and finalists will be announced in the fall, with the overall winner receiving prizes from media partners such as Leica cameras and Angelbird storage gear. This year's Illume Awards promises to be a celebration of not just photography but also the preservation of our natural environments.
